Free Ultrasound Services

Open Arms Pregnancy Clinic offers a limited ultrasound scan for those who qualify in order to confirm the following:

  1. The pregnancy is located within the uterus (not outside of the uterus or an ectopic pregnancy).
  2. There is a fetal heartbeat.
  3. The gestational age of the pregnancy (how many weeks pregnant you are).

Our limited obstetrical (OB) ultrasound scans are provided free of charge and are completely confidential.

Some restrictions apply.  Eligibility for a limited obstetrical (OB) ultrasound will be determined by the nurse during your first appointment and would be offered, once approved, as a second appointment.  We do not use ultrasound to determine the baby’s gender.

Why do I need an ultrasound after taking a positive test?

An ultrasound is very important before making a pregnancy decision because it will tell you if your pregnancy is viable - meaning there is a heartbeat - and that the pregnancy is located in the uterus. This is particularly important if you are considering an abortion because if the pregnancy is not viable or not in the uterus, an abortion is not the procedure that will be recommended. So if you are considering taking the abortion pill (RU486) or having a surgical abortion, it is very important to ensure a viable pregnancy. Another important aspect of an ultrasound is to determine gestation because different abortion methods are used at different stages of pregnancy.
