What Are the Types of Abortion?
Medication abortion, also known as the abortion pill, is a pregnancy termination method using two different types of abortion drugs, Mifepristone, and Misoprostol. This abortion method is only used for women up to 10 weeks of pregnancy.
The first drug, Mifepristone (also known as RU-486) is used to block the progesterone pregnancy hormone and prevent the pregnancy from growing. This is followed by Misoprostol, 24-48 hours later, which causes the uterus to empty by making it contract and expel the pregnancy. A follow-up with a medical professional is necessary after a medication abortion.
Surgical abortion is a more invasive process compared to medication abortion. Anesthesia is used during the procedure, and medical instruments are used to open the cervix and to remove all parts of the pregnancy within the uterus.
What are the Risks of Abortion?
